from 1980-1990 there was an outbreak of rabies on the Norwegian island of Svalbard:
this is a Big Fucken Deal because rabies is pretty absent in Europe, so the sudden appearance of the literal most deadly pathogen in human history on their tiny island within spitting distance of Europe proper was an absolute pants-shitting public health emergency.

several of the terrestrial animals were indeed rabies-positive, but they sure weren’t expecting it to be in one of the fucking seals! but boy, it sure was.
to be fair, the seal probably wasn’t expecting it either.
eventually no more suspicious animal activity was reported, no dead animals tested positive, and the outbreak was officially over. scientists are pretty sure the outbreak was started by a single rabid animal that somehow made its way onto the island, probably by crossing sea ice in the winter.
hopefully it stays that way, for the foxes sake if nothing else.
(and the 2,600 people who live on the island. I’m sure they were very relieved.)
